Ewe lambs and shearing

January 31, 2010

Very busy week on the farm, we have scanned our second batch of ewes and grouped them accordingly.

Glamorgan WFU produced a welsh breakfast for Ogmore Vale Primary with Mike Phillips (welsh rugby player and farmer’s son) to participate in Farmhouse Breakfast week. www.farmhousebreakfast.com

I visited Tonyrefail Comprehensive to help them with their GCSE Geography studies on hill farming and farm diversification let’s hope it comes up in the exams and good luck.

Friday we had a conference and a locally sourced welsh lunch with a neighbours organic welsh black beef (www.tytalgarth.co.uk ) in the stew, homemade chunky vegetable soup, local bread with welsh butter , this was followed by a welsh cheese and fruit platter with home made Bara Brith. In the morning as an alternative to biscuits we served cheese & bacon /cheese & leek muffins to mark Farmhouse breakfast week.

Satuday and Sunday the boys sheared the ewe lambs aren’t we glad our son went on the wool board course and is able to help.

Their fleece will grow back within 6 weeks and please see our video on the fleeces and our shorn and unshorn sheep

Anyone wishing to purchase some fleeces to spin or felt with please contact us info@lakesidefarmpark.co.uk

Farmhouse Breakfast Week

January 19, 2010

Glamorgan WFU are supporting Farmhouse Breakfast Week  at Ogmore Life Centre Tuesday with pupils from Ogmore Vale Primary.

Breakfast Benefits is the theme this year and we will be serving them a healthy breakfast with local products.

Ty Tanglwyst dairy in Bridgend is the source of milk and this has certainly gone down well in the past. Some of the children have met one of their cows when the cow visited the school last year.

Do they know it’s snowing?

January 15, 2010

At last the thaw is here our sheep have been oblivious to what is happening in the big world outside the sheep shed as you can see in the video.

It has been a difficult few weeks for farmers ,stock and wildlife let us hope the big freeze suggested for next week doesn’t happen.

We are due to lamb on feb 1st so it would be nice to see some grass instead of white blanket.

Snowing and the Robin

January 10, 2010

It’s snowing again and it’s my birthday a re run of the winterof 1963 when I made it into the world!

I have been using my leftover veg and crumbs to feed the birds and the robin has been very grateful……

The lake is still frozen over and it looks like our other duck has disappeared, no sign of the canadian geese either.

Decision to postpone Glamorgan WFU AGM due to weather conditions ……..

We will let you know when it’s rescheduled please all take care the snow is pretty but it is the ice underneath that’s the problem.

They say it is like 1963 again so a proper birthday this year.

Uncle ED doing what he does best!  Thank you Ed

YFC race night our host for the evening was Ed Llanciach who had never commentated on wooden horses before so was keen to try his hand he remembered the mouse racing from years gone by…….(shows his age!)

He did remember how to encourage people to part with their money and his “Ticket Tarts” did the rest a great night was had by all and top horse made £36.00 not bad for wood!! Llan trisant YFC would like to thank all sponsers, horse owners, Ticket Tarts and everyone who supported the event as it raised over £500.

Both my horses won but didn’t get anywhere in the final there is always next year…………It made up for Wales losing and missing the X factor.

Jill Evans MEP visit at Pantycornnant Farm Glynogwr 27th November

November 26, 2009

“What Carbon means to Farmers”

Great evening good presentation and heated debate afterwards. Thanks to all the speakers  Dr Glenda Thomas Director FWAG Cymru, Dai Davies President NFU Cymru, Andrew RT Davies AM and our panel chairman Julie Thomas for a very enjoyable evening. There was definitely some food for thought and I am certain some CO2 released in debate. I am sure that our carbon sinks on the farm offset this.

Outcome was that farmers need to promote the positive effects on climate change and advertise the reductions we have made so far.

The startling fact that the carbon footprint of the potato is most when in the home and being cooked …….

This subject will be continued at future events I am sure.
